Now I See

Now I See, is a Young Adult Crossover book that mixes the emotional depth of Delia Owens with the playfulness of Jeff Kinney.  It works as a stand-alone novel with potential for a series.

Set in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the mid-Sixties, eight-year-old Cecilia has a ‘perfectly normal’ life until her mom begins to lose her sight.  This catastrophic event shatters young Cecilia’s identify and sense of safety.  Despite her childlike antics to downplay the tragedy unfolding in her house, Cecilia’s friends cannot relate to life with a mother sinking deeply into darkness.

Enter Millie, Cecilia’s invisible friend.  Millie is spunky and warm, inspiring Cecilia to trust in herself.  Millie is there as Cecilia grows from child to teen, as her dad is elected to the school board, as her mom nears complete blindness.

At school, Cecila meets Father Groppi, whose civil-rights activities place him and Cecilia on a collision course with her dad and the racial powder keg that is mid-Sixties Milwaukee. Father Groppi and Millie each spur Cecilia to challenge her dad and explore her own perspectives. But only Cecilia can choose her path forward.
